  • Data-driven attribution (black-box ML model) is the default

What is GA4

GA4 is Google’s free analytics platform, the successor to Universal Analytics (sunset July 2023). The data model is event-based: every page view, click, scroll, and conversion is an event with parameters. Reports are configurable. raw data is exportable to BigQuery for SQL-level analysis.

Why GA4 alone isn’t enough in 2026

GA4 is free, ubiquitous, and good at what it does, but it’s pixel-based and uses Google’s data-driven attribution, which is a black box. For brands spending real money on paid acquisition, three GA4 limitations matter:

  1. Pixel-only tracking misses 20-40% of conversions due to ITP, ad blockers, and CMP consent dropout
  2. Black-box attribution assigns credit by a model you can’t inspect, override, or compare
  3. Cross-channel attribution is biased toward Google’s own surfaces

For brands above $50k/month in paid spend, GA4 gets paired with a first-party attribution layer like adtribute that captures conversions server-side and assigns credit through a transparent model.

FAQ about GA4

Is GA4 free?

Yes. The standard version of Google Analytics 4 is completely free with no credit card required. The only paid version is Google Analytics 360, which starts at around $50,000 per year and is designed for enterprises with high event volume or strict SLAs.

What are the limits of free GA4?

Data retention is capped at 14 months for event-level data. The free BigQuery export is limited to 1 million events per day. Data sampling kicks in on Explorations when queries exceed about 10 million events. For most businesses these limits are never hit.

Is GA4 GDPR-compliant?

GA4 can be configured to be GDPR-compliant with IP anonymization, Consent Mode, and EU data residency, but several EU data protection authorities have ruled standard GA implementations non-compliant in the past. Most brands now run GA4 server-side with Consent Mode v2 to address this.

GA4 vs Universal Analytics: what changed?

GA4 replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023 and uses an event-based data model rather than the session/hit model UA used. It is built for cross-platform (web + app) tracking, includes AI-powered insights and predictions, and integrates more tightly with Google Ads and BigQuery.
