In short

  • Built from data you own: customer email/phone lists, pixel or CAPI site events, app activity, or engagement
  • The core building block for retargeting and for seeding lookalike audiences
  • Match rates depend on signal quality; hashed first-party data sent server-side matches better than pixel-only
  • Meta Custom Audiences, Google Customer Match, and TikTok Custom Audiences are the same idea per platform

What a Custom Audience is

A Custom Audience is an ad-platform audience assembled from data you already own, rather than from the platform’s interest and demographic targeting. The sources are your customer lists (emails and phone numbers), your website visitors (captured by the pixel or CAPI), your app users, or people who engaged with your content. On Meta they are called Custom Audiences; Google’s version is Customer Match; TikTok, Pinterest, and the rest have direct equivalents.

Custom Audiences serve two jobs. First, retargeting: reach people who already know you, cart abandoners, past purchasers, recent visitors. Second, they are the seed for lookalike audiences, the platform finds new users who resemble the people in your Custom Audience.

Why signal quality decides match rates

A Custom Audience is only as good as the data behind it. When you upload a customer list, the platform hashes the identifiers and matches them against its own users; incomplete or stale data lowers the match rate and shrinks the usable audience. Website Custom Audiences depend entirely on the pixel or CAPI firing, so consent gaps, ad blockers, and iOS restrictions quietly erode them.

This is why first-party, server-side data matters here. Hashed customer data and server-side events (CAPI, Enhanced Conversions) produce higher match rates and more durable audiences than pixel-only collection, which loses a growing share of users.

Common patterns

  • Retargeting tiers. Separate audiences for 7-day visitors, cart abandoners, and past purchasers, each with different messaging and bids.
  • Suppression. Exclude recent purchasers from prospecting so you stop paying to reacquire people you just converted.
  • Lookalike seeds. Build a Custom Audience of your highest-LTV customers and seed a lookalike from it, better than seeding from all buyers.

FAQ about Custom Audiences

What is a Custom Audience?

An ad audience built from your own first-party data, customer lists, site visitors, app users, or engagement, used for retargeting and as a seed for lookalike audiences.

What is the difference between a Custom Audience and a Lookalike Audience?

A Custom Audience is people you already have a relationship with. A Lookalike Audience is new people the platform finds who resemble a Custom Audience you provide as the seed.

Why is my Custom Audience match rate low?

Usually stale or incomplete customer data, or website events lost to consent gaps and tracking prevention. Sending hashed first-party data and server-side events improves match rates.
