What is Social Snowball

Social Snowball is a Shopify app for word-of-mouth marketing: customer referral programs, affiliate and creator programs, and TikTok Shop affiliates, managed from one dashboard. Its central feature turns customers into affiliates automatically. When someone completes a purchase, Social Snowball creates an affiliate account with a unique discount code or tracking link and shows it on the thank you page, by email, and by SMS. Affiliates earn a commission on every sale they refer, and brands pay them in cash, gift cards, or store credit. The app launched on the Shopify App Store in December 2020, and Social Snowball says more than 3,500 brands use it.

Where Social Snowball fits in 2026

Social Snowball fits Shopify D2C brands that want referrals, affiliates, and creators in one program structure instead of separate apps. Programs and tiers segment affiliates automatically, for example VIP ambassadors apart from everyday customers, commissions can wait out a custom delay before payout, and recurring commissions cover subscription orders from apps such as Recharge, Loop, Skio, and Stay AI. Safelinks give every referred shopper a unique, single-use discount code, so a code that leaks to a coupon site can’t be reused. The Blizzard plan adds TikTok Shop affiliate management, social listening, and Creator Search, which finds Instagram creators through Meta’s Creator Marketplace API and runs email outreach sequences.

The trade-off is cost at scale. Snow Day starts at $249 a month plus 3% of affiliate revenue, so $50,000 in monthly affiliate sales adds $1,500 in usage fees. Blizzard starts at $899 a month with no usage charges, which on list prices makes it the cheaper plan once affiliate revenue passes about $21,700 a month, though Social Snowball sets up a custom Blizzard plan after install. The app only works with Shopify stores, including headless storefronts that use Shopify checkout. And when every buyer can become an affiliate, it pays to check how many referral orders come from new customers. Social Snowball can restrict affiliate codes to new customers, and your own attribution data shows which other channels those buyers came through.

How Social Snowball compares to alternatives

Versus UpPromote and Refersion: Both are Shopify affiliate apps with lower entry prices. UpPromote has a free plan for up to $3,000 in referral sales a month and paid plans from $29.99 a month plus 2% of referral sales, and it is rated 4.9 from 3,920 reviews on the Shopify App Store. Refersion starts at $39 a month plus 3% of affiliate-generated sales and is rated 4.8 from 494 reviews. Social Snowball starts at $249 a month plus 3% and builds its programs around customers who become affiliates the moment they check out. Versus Smile.io: Smile.io is a loyalty app where customers collect points and redeem them for discounts, free shipping, or free products, with referral rewards built in. It has a free plan for up to 200 orders a month and paid plans from $15 a month. Smile.io rewards customers with points, while Social Snowball pays affiliates a commission on each referred sale. Versus impact.com: impact.com runs affiliate, creator, referral, and retail media partnerships on one platform that isn’t tied to Shopify, with a marketplace of more than 250,000 partners. Self-serve plans start at $30 a month, and Essentials ($500 a month, for brands with up to $2 million in annual e-commerce revenue) includes customer referrals through its Advocate product. Social Snowball is narrower and runs entirely inside Shopify.

FAQ about Social Snowball

How much does Social Snowball cost?

Social Snowball has two plans on the Shopify App Store. Snow Day costs $249 a month plus 3% of affiliate revenue and includes unlimited affiliates, influencer management, post-purchase referrals, automated payouts, fraud and code-leak protection, and tiers. Blizzard starts at $899 a month with no usage charges and adds TikTok Shop, Creator Search and outreach, social listening, UGC, Instagram DM chat, and a dedicated customer success manager, with the final plan set up after install. Charges are in USD and billed every 30 days.

Does the 3% fee on Snow Day add up?

Yes, it grows with your program. At $20,000 in monthly affiliate revenue the fee is $600, so Snow Day costs $849 that month, and at $50,000 the fee alone is $1,500. On list prices, Blizzard’s $899 starting price is lower than Snow Day once affiliate revenue passes about $21,700 a month.

Does Social Snowball have a free plan or trial?

No. The Shopify App Store listing shows no free plan and no free trial on either plan. You can book a demo on the Social Snowball website before installing.

How does Social Snowball work?

You install the app from the Shopify App Store, create programs for customers, creators, or VIP tiers, and choose how sales are tracked: discount codes, UTM links, or Safelinks. Commissions can be a percentage or a fixed amount, set per product, or recurring for subscriptions. Social Snowball attributes Shopify orders to affiliates, applies fraud filters such as blocking self-referrals, and queues the commissions for payout.

How does Social Snowball turn customers into affiliates?

When “Turn customers into affiliates” is switched on, Social Snowball creates an affiliate account and a unique discount code or tracking link for every new customer who completes a purchase. The customer sees it on the thank you page and receives it by email and SMS, and Klaviyo flows can handle the follow-up. Brands can also invite past customers, recruit affiliates through sign-up forms, or import them from a CSV file.

How does Social Snowball pay affiliates?

Brands bulk-send payouts in two clicks: affiliates redeem cash through a branded portal with hundreds of options such as bank transfer, PayPal, Venmo, Visa cards, and gift cards, or receive store credit. Social Snowball also supports bank-to-bank payouts through Snowpay, payouts through Trolley, and manual payments via Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal. A custom delay can hold commissions for a set period before they become payable.

Is Social Snowball only for Shopify?

Yes. Social Snowball is available only for Shopify merchants selling online, including headless storefronts that use Shopify checkout. It also connects to TikTok Shop, so a brand’s Shopify and TikTok Shop affiliate programs can share one dashboard.

Does Social Snowball work with TikTok Shop?

Yes, on the Blizzard plan. Affiliates can join a brand’s TikTok Shop collaboration from their Social Snowball dashboard, each affiliate gets one profile with both TikTok Shop and Shopify store data, and tiers can unlock gifts and higher commissions at GMV milestones. Social Snowball also saves the shoppable content affiliates create.

Does Social Snowball have an API?

Social Snowball doesn’t publish public API documentation. Its Shopify App Store listing names APIs and webhooks among its features, and its Zapier app triggers on new affiliate sign-ups and new referral sales. Native integrations include Klaviyo, Postscript, Sendlane, KnoCommerce, Tremendous, Trolley, and subscription apps such as Recharge, Loop, Skio, and Stay AI.

Does Social Snowball use AI?

Yes, in Creator Search on the Blizzard plan. Its AI-powered keyword and lookalike search runs on Meta’s Creator Marketplace data, covering more than 2 million Meta-verified creators, to find Instagram creators that fit your brand, and it sends automated outreach emails. Programs, tiers, and payouts run on the rules and targeting criteria you set.

What are Social Snowball reviews?

Social Snowball is rated 4.6 on the Shopify App Store with 211 reviews, 91% of them five stars. Merchants highlight quick setup, turning every purchaser into an affiliate, flexible payouts, and fast support. On Trustpilot, where most of the roughly ten reviews come from affiliates reporting unpaid commissions, the TrustScore is 2 out of 5, and G2 has too few reviews for a score. See the Shopify App Store reviews for detailed feedback.

What are Social Snowball alternatives?

Shopify affiliate apps with lower entry prices include UpPromote and Refersion. For loyalty programs with points and referral rewards, Shopify brands use Smile.io or Yotpo. impact.com covers affiliate, creator, and referral partnerships beyond Shopify, and GRIN focuses on creator and influencer management.
