In short
- Reach = unique people exposed at least once; impressions can only be equal or higher
- Impressions ÷ reach = frequency, how often the same person saw the ad
- Meta publishes per-ad EU reach in its Ad Library under transparency rules, broken down by gender, age and country
- High reach plus a long run time is one of the strongest public signals that an ad is performing
Why reach matters
Reach answers the question impressions cannot: how many different people did this ad actually get in front of? Two campaigns with a million impressions each can be wildly different, one reached a million people once, the other hammered fifty thousand people twenty times. For prospecting, reach is the number that tracks real audience expansion.
Reach as a public performance signal
Most performance metrics are private, but reach is not: under EU transparency rules Meta publishes the reach of every ad in its Ad Library, including the split by gender, age and country. That makes reach the one performance signal you can read off a competitor’s ads. An ad that keeps accumulating reach month after month is being fed budget, and advertisers only keep feeding budget to ads that return it.
Reach vs impressions vs frequency
Impressions count every view, reach counts unique viewers, and frequency is the ratio between them. Watch all three together: rising impressions with flat reach means you are saturating the same audience, which is where ad fatigue starts and CPMs quietly stop buying you new customers.
FAQ about Reach
How is reach different from impressions?
Reach counts unique people; impressions count every display. One person seeing an ad five times is one reach and five impressions. Divide impressions by reach and you get frequency.
Where does the reach data in the Ad Library come from?
Directly from Meta. Under EU transparency rules, Meta publishes the reach of every ad in its own Ad Library, including the split by gender, age and country. Nothing is modelled or estimated on our side.
Is high reach the same as good performance?
Not by itself. Reach paired with a long run time is the stronger signal: advertisers only keep funding an ad that returns its budget, so sustained reach growth over months marks a proven winner.
