What is Meta Ad Library

Meta Ad Library is Meta’s public ad transparency database. Every ad currently running across Meta technologies, Facebook and Instagram included, is searchable by anyone, for free. It started in May 2018 as an archive of US political ads and became the Ad Library, covering all active ads, in March 2019. It also lists active branded content tagged as a paid partnership on Facebook and Instagram, for posts created on or after 17 August 2023.

Where Meta Ad Library fits in 2026

Meta Ad Library is the free baseline. Paid swipe-file tools (Foreplay, SwipeKit, top-ads.io) add the workflow Meta doesn’t offer: saving and tagging ads, briefs, AI search, collaboration, and a long-term archive of ads that have stopped running. If you’re doing one-off research, Meta Ad Library is enough. If you’re running organised creative pipelines, you’ll outgrow it within a quarter. For curated examples rather than raw search, the adtribute Ad Library collects the highest-reach Facebook and Instagram ads by industry and format, using the reach figures Meta publishes for ads shown in the EU.

What you can see depends on where an ad ran and what it is about. For an ordinary commercial ad that never reached the EU or UK, you get the creative, the Page, the start date, and the platforms, and the ad drops out of the library once it stops running. Ads delivered in the EU or UK stay archived for a year after their last impression and add total reach, reach broken down by age, gender, and location, and the advertiser’s age, gender, and location targeting (plus advertiser and payer details in the EU). Ads about social issues, elections, or politics are kept for seven years with spend and impression ranges, audience demographics, and the “paid for by” disclaimer. Spend and performance for commercial ads are never shown.

One change to keep in mind: since October 2025, Meta no longer allows political, electoral, and social issue ads in the EU, so no new EU political ads enter the library. Outside the EU, the seven-year political-ad archive continues.

Why Meta Ad Library matters in 2026

Two reasons it remains essential even as paid tools improve. First, it is the source of truth: every other tool works from what Meta publishes here, and because the API only covers political and issue ads plus ads shown in the EU and UK, third-party coverage of commercial ads in other markets depends on how often those tools capture the library’s public pages. Second, it’s the only place to verify a competitor is actually running an ad right now rather than relying on a third-party tool’s cache. Most professional workflows use the library for spot-checks even when a paid tool handles the day-to-day capture.

FAQ about Meta Ad Library

Is the Meta Ad Library free?

Yes. The Meta Ad Library is completely free, and you don’t need a Facebook account to browse it. Logged-out visitors don’t see age-restricted ads (for example alcohol or gambling), and downloading search results requires logging in and accepting Meta’s terms.

How do I search the Meta Ad Library?

Go to facebook.com/ads/library, pick a country and an ad category (“All ads” or “Issues, elections or politics”), then search by keyword or advertiser. Put a phrase in quotes for an exact match, then narrow the results with filters such as language, advertiser, platform, media type, active status, and date.

What can I see in the Meta Ad Library?

For every active ad you see the creative, the ad copy, the Page that runs it, the start date, and the platforms it runs on. Ads shown in the EU or UK add reach and targeting by age, gender, and location. Political and issue ads add spend and impression ranges, audience demographics, and the funding disclaimer. Commercial ads never show spend.

What are the limitations of the Meta Ad Library?

You cannot see spend or performance (CTR, conversions) for commercial ads, and a commercial ad that never ran in the EU or UK disappears once it stops running, with only its start date shown while it is live. You also cannot save or organise ads into boards, and search is keyword-based with no AI tagging. Paid tools like Foreplay, MagicBrief, and AdLibrary.com fill those gaps.

Can I download ads from the Meta Ad Library?

There is no download button for an ad’s video or image. Saving the creative means using your browser, a browser extension, or a paid tool like Foreplay or MagicBrief, which add one-click saving and organised libraries. Keep in mind that a public ad doesn’t come with reuse rights.

How to use Meta Ad Library?

Open https://www.facebook.com/ads/library, pick a country, and search by brand, Page, or keyword. No signup or login is required to browse.

Why choose Meta Ad Library?

Meta Ad Library is the free, official transparency tool from Meta, which makes it the baseline for competitor ad research before you consider any paid alternative.

How does Meta Ad Library work?

Meta publishes every active ad across its apps in a public, searchable library. Ads shown in the EU and UK stay archived for a year with reach and targeting data, and political and issue ads stay for seven years with spend and impression ranges.

How to learn Meta Ad Library?

Meta explains what the library shows for each type of ad in its Business Help Center article About the Meta Ad Library. Many ad research blogs and YouTube channels publish search and analysis tutorials.

What are Meta Ad Library alternatives?

Common alternatives include Foreplay, Atria, MagicBrief, Particl, and Motion for richer ad research, organisation, and competitive intelligence on top of the raw library.

Does Meta Ad Library have an API?

Yes. The Ad Library API covers ads about social issues, elections, or politics shown anywhere in the past seven years, and ads of any type delivered in the EU and UK in the past year. Ordinary commercial ads outside the EU and UK are not in the API. To use it, you confirm your identity and location with Meta and create a Meta developer account. Documentation is at https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/api.

Does Meta Ad Library have a trial or a demo?

Meta Ad Library is fully free with no trial or demo needed.

Does Meta Ad Library have AI?

Meta Ad Library itself is a transparency archive of ads with no built-in AI assistant. Search and filtering are manual, and any AI-powered ad analysis comes from third-party tools that pull from the library.
