Year over year growth of EU27 retail sales volume, the official monthly baseline for European consumer demand.

By Daniel Busch, Chief of Staff

Are retail sales growing in the EU? Real growth of EU27 retail sales volume was 1.2% year over year in August 2026, and 1.8% on average over the last twelve months, according to Eurostat.

Key takeaways

  • Real growth of EU retail sales volume was 1.2% year over year in August 2026, and 1.8% on average over the last twelve months.
  • This is the broadest official monthly read on European retail demand, in real volume terms with price effects stripped out.
  • Volume was below the previous year in almost every month from mid-2022 into early 2024, when high inflation squeezed household budgets. The weakest reading in the period shown was -3.6% in March 2023.
  • It is the baseline for the national lines on this site: a German print only means much relative to the European trend.
  • Aggregation across 27 markets smooths national noise, so this line turns more slowly and more reliably than any single country series.
  • The calendar-adjusted year over year basis matches the national pages here, so gaps between a country and the EU line are real, not definitional.

What this means for e-commerce and DTC brands

A brand selling across several European markets needs one answer to how Europe is doing before dissecting it country by country. This line is that answer. It separates continent-wide swings such as energy shocks, inflation squeezes, and recoveries from market-specific ones, which is the difference between adjusting a whole European plan and reallocating between countries. In practice the useful move is the spread: when a national line runs clearly above the EU line, that market has a tailwind worth funding, and when your growth lags the EU line in one market but not others, the problem is local. It also gives European demand planning a sober anchor, because inventory and revenue targets set far above the real demand trend are share-taking bets and should be priced as such.

What this statistic does not tell you

An EU27 aggregate hides national divergence, and because countries enter with their economic weight, the largest economies drive most of the movement while smaller markets barely register. This is total retail including groceries and fuel, so the index is dominated by categories a typical DTC brand does not compete in. It is a volume measure and reads weaker than nominal revenue when prices rise. Recent months are revised, and motor vehicle trade is excluded by definition.

Frequently asked questions

Are retail sales growing in the EU?

Real growth of EU27 retail sales volume was 1.2% year over year in August 2026, and 1.8% on average over the last twelve months. Volume was below the previous year in almost every month from mid-2022 into early 2024, when high inflation squeezed real spending. The weakest reading in the period shown was -3.6% in March 2023.

Is this the same as eurozone retail sales?

No, but the two move closely together. Eurostat publishes retail trade for both the euro area and the EU27, and this page shows the EU27, which adds the member states that do not use the euro, such as Poland, Sweden and Czechia. The euro area makes up most of the EU economy, so the trends rarely diverge for long.

Why do news reports quote a different retail sales figure?

Eurostat's monthly release leads with the seasonally adjusted change against the previous month, which is small and noisy. This page shows the calendar-adjusted change against the same month a year earlier, which Eurostat publishes in the same release. Recent months are also revised as late reports arrive, so an early headline can differ from the revised figure here.

Is this nominal or real growth?

Real. The figure is the change in the sales volume index, so price effects are removed and the line shows how much more (or less) is actually bought. In inflationary years it runs below the revenue growth retailers report.

Do EU retail sales include online sales?

Yes. NACE G47 covers all retail trade except motor vehicles, so internet and mail-order retailers are counted alongside stores, petrol stations and food retail. Online retail on its own has a separate page with the same definition and adjustment.

Which countries are in this figure?

All 27 EU member states in the post-2020 composition, so the United Kingdom is excluded. Countries are weighted by economic size, which means the largest economies account for most of the aggregate's movement.
