What this means for e-commerce and DTC brands

Every German e-commerce P&L pays this line. When courier prices inflate faster than your average order value grows, contribution margin erodes without a single decision being made, and free-shipping thresholds quietly become more expensive promises. Reading your negotiated rate changes against this market benchmark shows whether your logistics team is beating the market or just riding it, and a cooling print is an argument to take into the next carrier negotiation.

What this statistic does not tell you

The index covers postal and courier services in aggregate, including letter mail, not a parcel-only rate card. Because letter mail is in the index, regulated postage changes such as the Deutsche Post increase of January 2025 move it even when parcel rates do not. Your negotiated rates can move differently from the market index. It is quarterly and unadjusted, so single quarters can be noisy and year over year is the reliable read.

Frequently asked questions

Are shipping costs in Germany still rising?

Producer price inflation for German postal and courier services was 2.7% year over year in Q2 2026, and 3.7% on average over the last four quarters. Over the period shown, the annual rate ranged from 1.0% in Q2 2023 to 5.7% in Q3 2025.

Is this what my shop pays for shipping?

Not directly. It is the market-wide price index for German postal and courier services sold to business customers. Individual contracts move around it, which is exactly why it works as a negotiation benchmark.

Why does this differ from DHL, Hermes or DPD price increases?

Carriers change their list prices once or twice a year, and what you actually pay depends on your contract, volumes, parcel sizes and surcharges. The index averages prices across providers and services, including letter mail, so it moves more smoothly than any single price list, and it is published about ten weeks after each quarter ends.

Does this cover parcels only?

No. NACE H53 combines the postal services of universal service providers, which include letter mail, with other postal, courier and express services. Parcel and express services are part of it, but changes in letter postage move the index too.

How should I use this in carrier negotiations?

Compare the year over year change in your own rates with the index, which averaged 3.7% over the last four quarters. If your rates rose clearly faster, you have a case for renegotiating or putting the contract out to tender. If they rose more slowly, your contract is beating the market.
